Why resilience for Mental Health at Work Day?
Mental Health at Work Day provides us with an opportunity to address real issues that are impacting individuals across the UK – and a personal sense of resilience is something that everybody needs, regardless of career or job title.
Yet, despite how important it is, the term resilience has become watered down as it has many different interpretations and misconceptions associated with it.
Therefore, the aim of this year’s theme is to explore what resilience actually is and how it applies to us. But, more importantly, we’ll be addressing what resilience isn’t, with our key focus being on the fact that a resilient mindset isn’t about being unaffected by things, bouncing back or facing things alone, it’s about having the strategies and toolkit to look after yourself during everyday challenges and those bigger difficulties.
We know that sickness absences due to mental health struggles are at an all-time high, and while being resilient doesn’t eliminate mental health struggles, it can help us by ensuring that we have the tools to spot struggles sooner, lean on our support networks and utilise effective wellness strategies.
At Rightsteps, we believe that building a more resilient workforce requires a united front. Resilience isn’t something which you either have or don’t have, it’s something that can be nurtured and grow in psychologically safe environments where proactive mental health and wellbeing support is available and accessible.

Take 10: Resilience Brews Moment
We can’t talk about resilience at work without talking about the vital role that our colleagues play in supporting us to thrive.
Research by Nespresso into the power of coffee breaks found that:
- 81% of employees say coffee breaks help them to form stronger bonds with colleagues.
- 75% report better mental health and wellbeing at work after taking regular breaks.
- Connecting over a coffee break helps 67% of employees to feel more productive and collaborative.
- 53% have had a creative idea during a coffee break and 36% have solved a difficult problem while sipping their favourite brew.
- In companies with more than 20 employees, 83% reported that taking coffee breaks with colleagues helps to relieve stress.
Much like a tea or coffee, resilience is something that gets stronger with time the more we work at it and is at its best when it’s enjoyed with others. That’s why this Mental Health at Work Day we want as many people as possible to Take 10 minutes with a colleague to grab a coffee, pause, and connect.
This could look like a formal coffee morning in the staff room with the team, or a quick informal one on one catch up with a colleague via Teams. Whatever your resilience brews moment looks like, schedule some time for it, snap a quick picture and share it with us.
If you do want to go for a more planned, event-style resilience brews moment, you can find further resources and tools to promote it in our resource pack below.
