Understanding Remote Work Burnout
The relentless time pressures and the need to manage various stakeholders remotely were significant challenges. We were all adapting to a new way of working after a period of furlough, so there were many unknowns to the whole team. The lack of face-to-face interaction with my manager and wider team made communication and relationship-building difficult. This environment led to feelings of isolation and increased stress.
Recognising the Signs of Burnout
The continuous stress and high demands made me feel angry, demotivated, very emotional, and lethargic, ultimately culminating in burnout. The situation reached a breaking point, affecting both my personal and professional life. I realised that my reluctance to discuss my struggles with my manager and colleagues exacerbated the issue further.
Tools and Strategies for Managing Remote Work Burnout
The intervention program provided me with tools to manage my anxiety and improve my mental wellbeing. Upon returning to work, I felt a renewed sense of focus and productivity. I was better equipped to handle the pressures of my role and more aware of the importance of open communication. I also implemented some core self-care routines which I still use 5 years later; I make sure I go for a walk every day to take time away from my desk, I have a set finish time at the end of each day that I try and adhere to as much as possible, and I am continually learning about mental health and how to have conversations with people.
The Importance of Open Dialogue About Work from Home Burnout
One of the key lessons from this experience was the importance of discussing mental health openly. I realised that not knowing how to start the conversation with my manager and colleagues contributed to the severity of my situation. Moving forward, I am committed to fostering a more open dialogue about mental health in the workplace.
Lessons Learned
This experience highlighted the critical need for mental health awareness and support in high-pressure roles. By seeking help and taking proactive steps to manage my anxiety, I was able to return to work with a new perspective and improved productivity.
